Cheikh Mouhammadou Moustapha Mbacké 1927 - 1945
When, tired of war, at the end of a painful and unfair exile in Central Africa, the Colonial Power resolved to bring Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba back to Senegal, he found himself faced with a failure in his attempt to liquidate the Sheikh and his ideas. But he did not disarm: the fight was transposed onto the cultural level.
His new strategy was to undertake to erase from the memory of the people, even the memory of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba through the schooling of children whose brainwashing, cultural uprooting and Europeanization through assimilation to Western customs. According to the hopes of the Colonial Power, Mouridism was to collapse on its own as soon as its founder died, undermined by the dissensions which would inevitably arise, he believed, from succession quarrels, but also by the seductions of material life that 'he offers.,
All these hopes were subsequently to collapse miserably because Cheikh Ahmadou BAMBA would leave a descendant of Valiant Paladins of Islam who all distinguished themselves in the defense and propagation of the work of the founder of Mouridism.
The first of them, Cheikh Mouhammadou Moustapha MBACKE is distinguished by immeasurable courage, extraordinary intelligence, immense qualities of unifier, organizer, builder, all things which found the full measure of their expression in the particularly harsh context of the colonial era, in one of its most tragic periods: the interwar period.
This brave Knight of Islam who would take up and carry high the torch lit by his illustrious Father, was born in 1888 in Darou Salam, from a mother herself from a great family of scholars, Sokhna Aminata THERE.
It was also his maternal uncle, Serigne Ndame Abdou Rahmane LÔ, great companion of his Father, who would take charge of his initiation into the Koran, while Mame Thierno Birahim MBACKE, younger brother of the Sheikh, would in turn ensure his training in theological questions.
Subsequently, his father, the Sheikh himself, will be responsible for guiding his steps in the arcana of mystical training. Never was a student so gifted. He will excel to such an extent that his father will designate him as successor with the mission of strengthening the cohesion of the Mouride Community with the aim of making it prosper, but above all the construction of the Great Mosque, for the sole glory of God. . It is perhaps not superfluous to say that contemporaries reported that his Father showed him real affection because one had the feeling that he knew that he had invested his trust well.
The first opportunity that Cheikh Mouhammadou Moustapha MBACKE had to show that he lived up to his Father's hopes was in 1927, when the Sheikh disappeared. The speed and relevance of his reaction, the coolness, the discretion and the courage with which he had the illustrious body transferred to Touba, in the very coercive context of the colonial period, still command admiration today, when we know that it was not easy at the time to defy White Power (he gave his father a burial without informing the Administration, especially without his authorization) and to incur the wrath of his wrath.
Disregarding the obvious risks, he carried out his father's last wishes: to provide him with a burial in accordance with his wishes, according to the procedure that he himself had indicated, especially by ensuring that his body was not soiled, if only by the simple glance of a member of the colonial administration.
Another manifestation of his full capacity to play the role assigned to him by his father was the way in which he put an end to the desire for dissidence of certain Great Sheikhs after the disappearance of the Founder.
Through his personal aura, and his qualities as a great unifier, he managed to rally all the dignitaries and talibés around his person. To ensure the cohesion and strength of the Community, he intelligently chose the path of dialogue and consultation.
