Sheikh Abdou Lahad MBACKE
(1968-1989)
When, in 1914, Sheikh Abdoul Ahad was born in Diourbel, the one who would become the third Caliph General of the Mourides, Sheikh Ahmadou BAMBA, calling on his closest disciples to witness: "Pray for him so that Allah grants him a long life because, in him, I place immense hope." We are therefore not surprised that Baye Lahat, as the Mouride Community respectfully nicknamed him, has left in the hearts of the Mourides, more than ten years after his disappearance, a reputation, popularity and a charisma that nothing has eroded, commensurate with the hopes of his illustrious Father and Master.
A very widespread opinion is that, if the Koran could be incarnated in a human figure, it would certainly have borrowed the features of Serigne Abdoul Ahad. As much as the Koran is the supreme TRUTH, Baye Lahat had elevated the practice of truth to the rank of priesthood.
The popular imagination has preserved the memory of him as a man who was sober in his gestures and in his clothing, very friendly in his courtesy and helpfulness towards his neighbor, but stubbornly focused on the Truth. It was known that no one, even the highest authority imaginable or the closest relative, could find favor with him or protective understanding if he was in the wrong.
Moreover, was it not he who, in a memorable sermon, set the tone by affirming that a Muslim must stubbornly entrench himself in the Truth and, in the circumstances, consider the fact of living to be of no difference? in the warm and pleasant security of an environment which shares his convictions and that of being exposed to the bitterness of the hostility of detractors. What is decisive is that constancy in what is right will generate for him what is best.
If by his constancy in the service of God a believer succeeds in gaining divine approval, no human enterprise, no coalition, even if equipped with the most sophisticated means, can cause him the slightest harm. On the other hand, nothing can protect a creature from divine sanction if it has the misfortune of having contravened the Law. Not even the most unanimous human approval, much less the most laudatory testimonies of his fellow human beings.
This man, of the extremely rare stuff of which the Truthful witnesses of Allah are made, assimilated the Koran and the collateral religious sciences, very early, under the rule of his uncle Serigne Amsatou DIAKHATE, brother of his holy mother, the virtuous Sokhna Mariama DIAKHATE who will also have the pleasure of being the mother of Serigne Souhaïbou MBACKE, this other brave knight of Islam. He has such detailed knowledge of the work of his venerated Father, such deep consideration, that his life is the perfect illustration of the teachings it conveys.
We know that Sheikh Ahmadou BAMBA teaches his disciples the exclusive worship of the One and a practice based on the Sunnah. In-depth knowledge of sacred texts (Quran, Hadiths, Religious Sciences, etc.) is obviously an essential prerequisite, in the mind of the Sheikh who, at the same time, has elevated honest work to the rank of sanctifying dogma. It is now easy to understand why, during the long magisterium of Serigne Fallou, his predecessor (1945 to 1968), Serigne Abdoul Ahad, in a discreet manner, sometimes bordering on the search for anonymity, devoted his life to his work by striving to live only on the honest and lawful fruit of his labor. His status as son of the Master nevertheless authorizes him, if he had wanted, to live in opulence, from the offerings (adiya) of the Mouride disciples.
He preferred, as a talibé among the talibés, to carry out all forms of activities with his hands to make a living from his pain. Moreover, did he not make a vow, like all his brothers and sisters, to abdicate his rank as son of the Sheikh to only seek that of talibé.
